Join Alberta Innovates, Stantec, and COSIA for a live webinar series on the untapped potential of Alberta’s oil sands
When we think of oil sands and bitumen, we might picture a natural resource that is converted into gasoline, diesel fuel, and heating oil. These products release energy upon combustion, essential to industry and our lives.
But, are there potential uses of bitumen that are not combustion products and meet emerging global needs? Alberta Innovates and Stantec team up to answer just that in this webinar series bringing you insights from a major new initiative led by Alberta Innovates, called ‘Bitumen Beyond Combustion, (BBC)’.
Learn about potential BBC products that can be produced from oil sands bitumen on a large scale to serve emerging needs, strengthen and diversify Canada’s economy, and address sustainability.
Webinar 1: Introduction to Bitumen Beyond Combustion
Tuesday, October 30, 2018, 2 PM to 3 PM MST
Opening with the vision and story of BBC thus far, this interactive and engaging session will offer a broad overview of the recent BBC study, Bitumen Beyond Combustion - Phase 2 Report, conducted by Stantec Consulting for Alberta Innovates which addresses the potential for using bitumen as inputs to non-combustion products.
Webinar 2: Bitumen Beyond Combustion - Carbon Fibres and Uses
This session will kick off with an overview of what carbon fibre really is and discuss market, trends, and the significant potential of carbon fibres in the future. We will look at carbon fibre production from existing feedstocks as well as potentially from Oil Sands derived feedstocks, manufacturing locations, and associated social and environmental aspects. We hope to cast some light on understanding numbers, technology readiness levels, and offer insights on key issues and leading opportunities.
