David Collins presents a case study describing the remediation effort at an area formerly used for acidic and hydrocarbon-based waste. On the site, residual acid tar (RAT) was characterized by low pH (often <3), density greater than water, increased liquid content with high sulfate concentrations, and a strong sulfur-based odor. The treatment objective was to limit transport of nickel in aqueous phase beyond the point of compliance.
