Creating a recreational and ecological oasis grounded at the community level

Owned by Sheboygan County, the 328-acre (133-hectare) Amsterdam Dunes Preservation Area is located along Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan shoreline and is one of the few remaining undeveloped beach shorelines. The property contains seven contiguous parcels with rare sand dunes, forest, wetlands of various types, bluffs, streams, and diverse plants and wildlife.

The Amsterdam Dunes site could have been just another shoreline development, but County leadership had the foresight to preserve and restore this once highly disturbed agricultural land to create an ecologically protected and recreational oasis for the community. The County needed help and engaged us as one of their partners in this pursuit.

We have played a key and critical role in securing and managing funding sources for a variety of project stakeholders. Over the course of more than seven years, we have also provided restoration design for wetlands, streams, rare Great Lakes ridges and swales, prairies, and forests along with woodland management, invasive species control, construction oversight, and volunteer coordination.

Once fully complete, Amsterdam Dunes will be a recreational and environmental centerpiece and provide high quality corridors connecting the forest to the bluffs, ridge and swale, and Lake Michigan shoreline for the benefit of native flora and fauna.
