Urban heat island. Not a new reality show, but a real phenomenon that occurs in cities that can negatively affect citizens' health. A heat island occurs when warm temperatures aren't regulated properly through evapotranspiration and shade from canopy trees and other vegetation, causing unhealthy levels of ozone.
In Nevada Planner's Summer 2018 edition, Cynthia Albright authored an article how Stantec is working with the Washoe County Health District and the NASA DEVELOP Program to better understand this issue and plan for and mitigate future air quality issues in the Reno-Sparks metropolitan area.
