Design can both reflect and transform culture


Today’s headlines often describe the ways in which technology is changing how we live—not always for the better. Now more than ever, it’s worth reminding ourselves that design can be a powerful agent in shaping culture. We see design as an opportunity to shape the way we behave in society. With thoughtful approach and application, it can bring our human qualities to the fore. It can help us respond to dramatic change brought on by technology, growth, and diversity.

In the second issue, the Stantec Design Quarterly: Culture by Design, we look at the ways culture can be influenced by design in the institutional, corporate, community, and higher education markets. We also examine ways in which cultural diversity can not only inform our designs but enrich our everyday experiences.



Successful design can further face-to-face human connection at university, it can transform disused retail outlets into convenient access points for healthcare, it can help organizations get work done while engaging personnel, and it can revive an urban art school’s prospects. In each case, the goal is to bring people together—inspiring us to work, play, learn, and get healthy in our communities.

We believe in the power of place to transform lives. By keeping people at the heart of what we do, we’re designing places that meet our needs today while delivering on the promise of tomorrow. We hope you’ll find the second edition of Stantec Design Quarterly as inspiring and thought-provoking as we do.
