Stantec’s Rajat Shanker demonstrates the value of building information modeling
The use of BIM in the Middle East is developing and poised for dramatic growth. Clients are beginning to see the benefits and consultants and contractors are changing the way they work. Stantec is one of the companies that is mandating the use of BIM irrespective of contractual requirements. Why? Because it helps us to streamline project delivery and present value concepts to clients. We’ve been able to prove this to our clients in design, and as a result, they have procured contractors with BIM capabilities to construct our designs.
This case study on the benefits realized for Mediclinic Parkview Hospital demonstrates the value and potential. The original schedule called for concept design to construction documentation in 32 weeks. When, early in the design stages the client tabled the idea of a future expansion, expanding the building’s size by about 60% the efficiency of designing in BIM allowed us to accommodate the changes with only four weeks added to the design schedule—a 12.5% increase in schedule for a 60% increase in project scope.
Using BIM models to demonstrate the design to client approvers made the process efficient. And with a knowledge of the value of BIM Mediclinic brought in a BIM capable contractor creating shop drawings from BIM and utilizing clash detection capabilities.
